Txakoli Day of Getaria

The Txakoli Day of Getaria (Getariako Txakolin Eguna) is one of the most representative gastronomic celebrations in the Basque Country, dedicated to txakoli, the region’s traditional white wine. Held every January in the coastal town of Getaria, in Gipuzkoa, the event marks the official presentation of the new vintage of Getariako Txakolina, a wine with Denomination of Origin (D.O.) status. The festival combines wine culture, local tradition, and social gathering in an atmosphere that reflects the identity and hospitality of this historic fishing town.

The celebration begins with a formal opening ceremony in the town square, where local authorities and winemakers inaugurate the new season. The first bottle of the year is uncorked in a symbolic gesture that pays tribute to the region’s viticultural heritage. From that moment, visitors can taste the latest production of txakoli, a crisp, slightly sparkling white wine known for its freshness and characteristic acidity. The wine is produced from the native Hondarrabi Zuri grape, cultivated on the steep, terraced vineyards that surround Getaria and face the Cantabrian Sea.

Throughout the day, the streets of Getaria fill with people sampling txakoli at stands set up by local wineries and bars. Traditional Basque music, dance performances, and food stalls featuring regional specialities such as grilled fish, pintxos, and cheese create a festive atmosphere. Despite the winter season, the event attracts both locals and visitors, offering an authentic experience of Basque conviviality.

The Txakoli Day also highlights the importance of Getaria’s winemaking tradition, which dates back several centuries and remains a defining element of its landscape and economy. The Denomination of Origin, established in 1989, ensures the quality and traceability of the wine, and the festival serves as a showcase for the craftsmanship of local producers.
