The San Sebastián International Film Festival (SSIFF), known locally as Zinemaldia, is one of the most prestigious film festivals in Europe. Established in 1953, it takes place annually in San Sebastián (Donostia), Gipuzkoa, and has gained international recognition for showcasing high-quality cinema from around the world.
Zinemaldia is classified as an A-category festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), placing it among the most important festivals alongside Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. It has been a platform for renowned filmmakers and emerging talents, featuring world premieres and exclusive screenings. Over the years, it has hosted legendary figures such as Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Audrey Hepburn, and Pedro Almodóvar.
The festival’s highest award is the Golden Shell (Concha de Oro), given to the best film in the Official Selection. Other awards include the Silver Shells for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress, as well as the Donostia Award, which honors the careers of influential actors and filmmakers.
The event is held in multiple venues across the city, including the Kursaal Congress Centre, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, and the Tabakalera Cultural Centre. In addition to the Official Selection, Zinemaldia features various sections such as New Directors, Horizontes Latinos (Latin American cinema), Zabaltegi-Tabakalera (experimental films), and Perlak (critically acclaimed international films).
San Sebastián becomes a cultural hub during the festival, attracting industry professionals, critics, and cinema enthusiasts. The event significantly contributes to the city’s economy and tourism, reinforcing its status as a reference point for international cinema.
