Zumaia Coastal Route

The coastal walk from Zumaia that passes the Hermitage of San Telmo, the Algorri Flysch, and the Baratzarrak viewpoint is one of the most scenic routes in the Basque Country coast. This itinerary combines geological interest, maritime landscapes, and cultural heritage, offering visitors a complete experience of the Basque Coast Geopark.

The route begins in the town of Zumaia, known for its fishing and maritime tradition. From the old port area, a short ascent leads to the Hermitage of San Telmo, a small 16th-century chapel dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Perched dramatically on the edge of the cliffs above Itzurun Beach, the hermitage is one of the most photographed landmarks on the coast. The viewpoint beside it offers a panoramic view of the Flysch cliffs, where millions of years of geological history are exposed in striking rock strata.

Continuing west along the cliff path, the trail enters the Algorri area, a natural reserve that forms part of the Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. The Algorri Flysch is an extraordinary geological formation created by the gradual sedimentation of marine materials over 60 million years. The alternating layers of limestone and marl reveal key moments in Earth’s history, including the boundary that marks the extinction of the dinosaurs. Interpretation panels along the route provide information about the formation and scientific significance of these cliffs.

The path continues the shoreline along the Aitzuri beach and it is important to do this section of the route at low tide. At the end of the beach we go inland, the path starts ascending gently until we reach to the Baratzarrak viewpoint, one of the best vantage points on the route. From here, visitors can enjoy wide views over the coastline stretching towards Deba and the open Cantabrian Sea. The return to Zumaia follows an inland path that descends through rural landscapes and meadows.

With a moderate level of difficulty and well-maintained trails, this circular walk is suitable for most visitors. The combination of cultural landmarks, scientific interest, and spectacular views makes it one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Basque Country.
