Petit train de La Rhune

The Petit Train de La Rhune is a historic cogwheel railway that offers a unique way to explore the beauty of the Basque Country. Located in the French Basque region, the train ascends La Rhune (Larrun), a prominent mountain standing at 905 meters above sea level, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

Constructed in the early 20th century, the train officially began operations in 1924. Its creation was part of a broader effort to promote tourism in the region while respecting the natural environment. The railway retains its vintage charm, with its original wooden carriages and carefully maintained track system, making it a nostalgic experience for visitors.

The journey starts at the Col de Saint-Ignace, near the village of Sare, and takes about 35 minutes to reach the summit. The train travels at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to enjoy the stunning scenery, which includes lush forests, rolling hills, and the Atlantic coastline. Along the way, it’s common to spot Pottoka ponies, a native Basque breed, and various bird species. At the summit, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Basque Coast, the Pyrenees, and even as far as the Landes region on clear days. The summit also features a small café and souvenir shop, making it a perfect spot for relaxation.

La Rhune, or Larrun in Basque, holds significant cultural and historical importance. It is covered in dolmens, stone circles and other neolithic monuments. The mountain is a relavant site in Basque mythology as it was said to be the home of Lehensugea, the first serpent.

The Petit Train de La Rhune operates seasonally, typically from April to November, and is a popular attraction for families, hikers, and nature enthusiasts.
