When & Where: December 21. In Areatza and Plaza Nueva squares.
The Santo Tomás Fair, celebrated annually on December 21st, is one of Bilbao’s most cherished and traditional events.
Dating back to the 19th century, the fair originated when Basque farmers (“baserritarras”) were required to pay rent for the land they cultivated. This payment was due on December 21st, and the farmers would come to the city to settle their debts with their best products. To make the trip worthwhile, they would bring their entire harvest to sell to the city dwellers, and thus began the Santo Tomás market. Year after year, the event has grown stronger, becoming a celebration of Basque culture, gastronomy, and rural heritage.
The fair takes place in various locations across the city, with the Arenal and Plaza Nueva serving as the main hubs. These areas are transformed into bustling open-air markets, featuring more than 300 stalls showcasing a wide range of local products. Visitors can purchase fresh produce, cheeses, honey, preserves, baked goods, and handmade crafts. Among the most popular items are txakoli (Basque white wine), cider, and talo con chistorra, a traditional Basque snack consisting of a cornmeal flatbread filled with chistorra sausage.
The Santo Tomás Fair is also known for its vibrant cultural atmosphere. Traditional Basque music, including trikitixa (accordion) performances and bertsolaritza (improvised poetry), fills the air, accompanied by dance exhibitions and other folkloric displays. Craft demonstrations, such as woodcarving and basket weaving, add an educational dimension to the festivities.
The Santo Tomás Fair is not only a major shopping event but also a celebration of community and tradition, attracting around 100.000 visitors each year. It provides a unique opportunity to experience the essence of Basque culture in the heart of Bilbao, making it a highlight of the city’s festive season.
