Bizkaiako Zubia (Puente Colgante), also known as the Vizcaya Bridge, is an iconic architectural and engineering marvel located near Bilbao. Spanning the Nervión River, it connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo.
Designed by Basque engineer Alberto Palacio, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge was completed in 1893 and became the world’s first transporter bridge. Its innovative design combines a steel structure with a gondola suspended by cables, allowing passengers and vehicles to cross the river efficiently without disrupting maritime traffic.
A symbol of industrial heritage, the bridge has withstood significant historical events, including the Spanish Civil War, during which it was partially destroyed and later rebuilt. In 2006, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding contribution to the development of modern engineering.
Today, Bizkaiako Zubia remains in operation, offering both a practical crossing and a unique experience. Visitors can use the gondola or walk along the upper footbridge to enjoy panoramic views of the river, nearby towns, and the Bay of Biscay.
