Located in the municipality of Sopela, just a few kilometres north of Bilbao, Barinatxe (commonly known as La Salvaje) and Arrietara form one of the most distinctive coastal areas in the Basque Country. These two adjoining beaches, separated by a small rocky promontory, combine natural beauty with a strong surfing tradition and a vibrant seaside atmosphere.
Barinatxe Beach, stretching for nearly 800 metres, is characterized by its open exposure to the Cantabrian Sea and the cliffs that frame it. Its nickname, La Salvaje (“the wild one”), reflects the power of its waves and the unspoiled quality of its landscape. The beach is surrounded by steep green cliffs that provide exceptional panoramic views and are popular for paragliding. Barinatxe is also known for its designated naturist area and for hosting local surfing and bodyboarding competitions. Despite its rugged environment, the beach is equipped with essential services such as showers, lifeguards, and seasonal beach bars.
Adjacent to it, Arrietara Beach offers a slightly more sheltered environment and is directly accessible from the town of Sopela. It is the main surfing hub of the area, with several surf schools and rental facilities operating year-round. The beach’s fine golden sand and consistent waves attract both beginners and experienced surfers, as well as families seeking a wide, clean space to enjoy the sea. The surrounding promenade features cafés, restaurants, and outdoor terraces that maintain a relaxed coastal ambiance throughout the year.
The cliffs above both beaches form part of the Flysch Route of the Basque Coast, a geological formation that reveals millions of years of Earth’s history through its layered rock strata. Several marked trails connect Sopela with neighbouring coastal towns, offering scenic walks and views of the Bay of Biscay.
It is easy to reach the beaches of Sopelana by public transport. Take the metro and get off at Larrabasterra station; as soon as you exit, wait for the next Sopelbus, which will take you directly to the beach. You can also skip the bus and walk there instead.
