Urallaga cave and Magdalena chapel

The route to Cueva de la Magdalena, also known as the Urallaga Cave, is one of the most fascinating hiking routes in the old mining area of La Arboleda, in Bizkaia. This easy walk combines industrial heritage, mountain landscapes, abandoned mining areas, and an impressive underground cave system linked to the region’s iron-mining past.

The hike starts at the Ekoetxea Meatzaldea – Peñas Negras Interpretation Centre, where there is convenient parking and information about the mining history of the area. From there, a wide and well-marked track leads through the green hills of the Triano Mountains, passing old mining landscapes and the remains of the old mining village of Sauco.

The route is considered easy and suitable for most visitors. The round trip covers approximately 8.5 km and usually takes between 3 and 4 hours, depending on how much time is spent exploring the cave. There is very little elevation gain, making it a good option for families and casual hikers.

The main highlight of the walk is the spectacular entrance to the Urallaga Cave, a huge opening more than 15 meters high. Inside, visitors can still see remains of the old mining infrastructure, including rails, tunnels, and industrial structures. The cave also contains a small chapel dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, traditionally visited by miners before entering the dangerous galleries.

The cave formed part of the historic Pepita mine, one of the most productive — and dangerous — iron mines in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mining activity continued until the 1960s, leaving behind a remarkable underground landscape that today attracts hikers and speleology enthusiasts.

Visitors should bring suitable walking shoes, a flashlight or headlamp, and an extra layer of clothing, since temperatures inside the cave are much colder and humidity is very high. Great care should always be taken inside the cave, especially on wet or slippery sections.
