Santa María Cathedral

Santa María Cathedral, often known as the “Old Cathedral,” is the most important tourist landmark in Vitoria-Gasteiz and one of the defining monuments of Álava. Located in the city’s medieval quarter, the Gothic cathedral combines its religious function with an ambitious restoration project that has become internationally recognized for its transparency and educational approach.

Reopened for worship in 2014, the cathedral is famous for its “Open for Works” concept, allowing visitors to explore the building while restoration work continues. This innovative model has attracted thousands of visitors every year and transformed the cathedral into a leading example of architectural conservation in the Basque Country.

Architecture, Restoration, and Cultural Importance

Construction began during the thirteenth century, although structural instability affected the building for centuries. Rather than hiding these problems, the restoration project made them part of the visitor experience. Guided tours explain the engineering challenges, archaeological discoveries, Gothic architecture, and evolution of the cathedral over time.

The cathedral also gained international attention after British author Ken Follett visited the site and drew inspiration from it while writing World Without End, the sequel to The Pillars of the Earth.

Guided Tours and Visitor Information

Several guided tour options are available, including the standard cathedral visit, combined tours with the medieval walls, and tower visits offering panoramic views over Vitoria-Gasteiz. Tours are offered in multiple languages and usually require advance booking. Helmets are often provided as part of the restoration-route experience.

The cathedral is open throughout the year, and a standard guided visit generally costs around €9, with extended tours available at slightly higher prices. Arriving early is recommended, especially during weekends and summer months.
