Castillo de Tiebas is one of the most historically important castle ruins in Navarre. Located south of Pamplona, the fortress once served as a royal residence and strategic defensive stronghold within the medieval Kingdom of Navarre. Although today it survives in a ruined state, the remains still reflect the political and military importance the castle once held.

Construction and Royal History

The origins of the castle date back to the mid-thirteenth century. It was constructed either by King Theobald I of Navarre or his successor Theobald II of Navarre, both members of the Champagne dynasty that ruled Navarre during an important period of political consolidation and architectural development.

Unlike many purely military fortresses, Castle of Tiebas also functioned as a royal palace. Medieval chronicles describe it as one of the preferred residences of the Navarrese monarchy, strategically positioned near major communication routes linking Pamplona with southern Navarre and the Ebro valley.

The castle formed part of a broader defensive and administrative network that included nearby fortified settlements and castles across central Navarre. Other important sites in the region included Royal Palace of Olite, Castillo de Santacara, the fortified settlement of Rada and the castle of Marcilla.

Destruction and Current Situation

Like many Navarrese fortifications, Castle of Tiebas suffered significant destruction after the Castilian conquest of Navarre in 1512. During the sixteenth century, Cardinal Cisneros ordered the dismantling of many castles to prevent future uprisings against Castilian authority.

Over the centuries, parts of the structure were abandoned and reused as a source of construction materials for nearby buildings. Today, the castle remains largely in ruins, though sections of walls, towers, and foundations are still visible and allow visitors to understand the scale of the original complex.

Practical Information for Visitors

The ruins are located close to the modern town of Tiebas and can be reached easily by road from Pamplona. The site is open-air and relatively accessible, though the terrain around the remains can be uneven in some areas.

Visitors interested in medieval history often combine Castle of Tiebas with routes exploring other castles, Romanesque churches, and fortified villages throughout central Navarre. Spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable conditions for visiting the site and surrounding countryside.
