Artziniega

Artziniega, a charming town in Araba, boasts a rich history and a captivating natural setting. Situated in the heart of the Ayala Valley, this picturesque settlement dates back to the 13th century, when it was founded as a royal villa by King Alfonso X of Castile.

The town’s origins can be traced to the year 1272, when it was granted a royal charter, officially establishing it as a municipality. Over the centuries, Artziniega has played a significant role in the region’s political and cultural landscape, serving as an important administrative and commercial center.

One of the town’s most notable landmarks is the Church of San Martín, a stunning example of Gothic architecture that dates back to the 15th century. The church’s intricate stone façade and towering bell tower are a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the era. Inside, visitors can admire the ornate altarpiece and the impressive vaulted ceilings.

Artziniega’s historic charm is further enhanced by its well-preserved medieval streets and traditional Basque architecture. The town’s narrow alleyways and quaint plazas are lined with charming houses, some of which feature the characteristic wooden balconies and stone walls that are emblematic of the region.

Artziniega is home to the Museo etnográfico de Artziniega, Torre Ortiz de Molinillo and Fragua de Artziniega.
