The Azpeitiko danborrada, or Drum Parade of Azpeitia, is one of the most important winter celebrations in Gipuzkoa. Held every year on January 19 and 20, the festival honours Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the town, through music, marching, and community tradition.

Many drum parades are celebrated throughout Gipuzkoa at different times of the year. The most famous is the Donostiako Tamborrada in Donostia-San Sebastián, followed by the Alarde of Hondarribia and the San Marcial celebrations in Irun. Each celebration has its own distinct local identity, historical background, musical traditions, and ceremonial customs.

History and Cultural Importance

The danborrada tradition in Azpeitia is linked to the broader Basque custom of celebrating Saint Sebastian’s Day on January 20. Over time, the event evolved into a highly organised drum parade involving neighbourhood groups, local associations, and generations of families. Today, the celebration is considered one of the defining cultural events of Azpeitia.

Festivities begin on the evening of January 19, known locally as the eve of Saint Sebastian’s Day. Around 10 pm, 27 adult drum groups march through the streets of the town, playing rhythmic drum music that echoes across the historic centre. After stopping at the church of San Sebastian de Soreasu, all groups gather in the main square at midnight, marking the official beginning of the 24-hour celebration.

For residents, the songs, routes, and ceremonial moments carry strong emotional and symbolic meaning. The parade is not only a festival but also an expression of Basque identity and local continuity.

Visitors to Azpeitia during the danborrada should expect large crowds and a lively atmosphere throughout the town. The best viewing areas are the old town streets and the central plaza shortly before midnight. January weather in Gipuzkoa is often cold and rainy, so warm and waterproof clothing is recommended.
