The Sanctuary of Loyola

Sanctuary of Loyola is one of the most important religious and historical sites in the Basque Country. Located in the Urola Valley, near the town of Azpeitia, the sanctuary is best known as the birthplace of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order and one of the most influential religious figures of the 16th century.

The complex was built around the original Loyola family tower house, where Ignatius was born in 1491. After being seriously injured during a battle, Ignatius began a spiritual transformation that eventually led him to found the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits. His ideas and writings had a major influence on Catholicism around the world.

Construction of the sanctuary began in the late 17th century and created one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Basque Country. The enormous basilica, with its impressive dome inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, dominates the surrounding valley. Inside, visitors can admire ornate chapels, religious artworks, and the preserved rooms connected to the early life of Ignatius.

The sanctuary complex includes the basilica, the historic tower house, a large square, gardens, and several walking areas surrounded by green hills. Even visitors who are not particularly religious often enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the architectural beauty of the site.

The Sanctuary of Loyola is easy to visit by car and is located about 45 minutes from both Bilbao and San Sebastian. Free parking is available nearby, and the site can easily be combined with other attractions in the Urola Valley, such as Azpeitia’s old town or the Basque Railway Museum.
