Ermita de Santa María de La Piscina is one of the most beautiful and historically significant Romanesque hermitages in La Rioja, very close to the border with Alava. Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills near the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the hermitage offers visitors a fascinating combination of medieval history, architecture, and peaceful rural landscapes.
The hermitage was built in the 12th century and is closely linked to the legend of Ramiro II of Aragon. According to tradition, the king participated in the Crusades in the Holy Land and, after returning, founded the hermitage to preserve relics brought back from Jerusalem. The unusual name “La Piscina” is believed to refer symbolically to the Pool of Bethesda, a sacred site in Jerusalem associated with healing in Christian tradition.
Architecturally, the building is considered one of the finest examples of rural Romanesque art in the Rioja area. Visitors can admire its elegant stone construction, semicircular apse, carved capitals, and decorative details typical of medieval religious architecture. The simple but harmonious design reflects the artistic influences that spread across northern Spain during the period of the Camino de Santiago.
Beside the hermitage stands a small medieval necropolis with anthropomorphic stone tombs carved directly into the rock. These graves add even more historical atmosphere to the site and help visitors imagine the isolated rural communities that once lived in the area.
Today, the hermitage remains a peaceful and relatively uncrowded destination, ideal for travelers interested in medieval history, architecture, and wine country landscapes. The surrounding vineyards of Rioja make the setting especially scenic throughout the year, particularly during autumn harvest season.
The site is easiest to reach by car and can easily be combined with visits to San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Briones, Laguardia, or nearby wineries. Comfortable footwear is recommended, especially if exploring the surrounding countryside and the nearby medieval tombs.
