The Chillida Leku Museum stands as a captivating tribute to the life and work of one of the Basque Country’s most renowned artists, Eduardo Chillida. Opened in 2000, this unique cultural institution offers visitors an immersive experience where art, architecture, and landscape come together in harmony.
The museum was conceived from Chillida’s own vision. He personally selected the 11-hectare estate and worked closely on the transformation of the site into a place where his sculptures could exist in dialogue with nature. The result is a unique environment in which monumental works of steel, granite, alabaster, and concrete are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, inviting visitors to discover new perspectives with every step.
At the heart of Chillida Leku are more than thirty large-scale sculptures displayed outdoors alongside a comprehensive collection of works spanning the artist’s entire career. The museum offers a rare opportunity to experience Chillida’s work in the setting he imagined, where light, space, and the changing seasons become an essential part of each encounter with the sculptures.
The historic Zabalaga farmhouse, a meticulously restored 16th-century Basque farmhouse, forms the centrepiece of the museum. It hosts two temporary exhibitions each year, exploring different aspects of Eduardo Chillida’s artistic practice in dialogue with invited contemporary artists. These exhibitions offer fresh perspectives on Chillida’s legacy while creating meaningful connections between his work and contemporary artistic approaches.
Visitors can also enjoy Lurra Café, the museum’s restaurant, where seasonal cuisine and local produce complement the experience and provide the perfect setting to relax before or after exploring the museum.
The museum’s peaceful atmosphere encourages visitors to slow down, engage deeply with the artworks, and enjoy an experience where sculpture, nature, and architecture come together creating a unique cultural destination unlike any other.
