Cider Day of Astigarraga

When & Where: July 26, in Foru Enparantza in Astigarraga

The Sagardo Eguna (Cider Day) is one of the most emblematic gastronomic and cultural events in the Basque Country. Celebrated every year on Santa Ana Day (26 July), the festival pays tribute to Basque cider (sagardo), a drink that forms an essential part of the region’s rural life and social traditions. The event takes place in Astigarraga, a town near San Sebastián widely recognised as the capital of Basque cider, and serves as a showcase for the local cider houses (sagardotegiak) that define its landscape and culture.

First held in the 1980s, Sagardo Eguna was created to promote local cider production and to celebrate the new season in a communal and festive atmosphere. Over time, it has grown into a major event that attracts thousands of visitors from across the Basque Country and neighbouring regions. The main celebration takes place in the town square, where numerous cider producers set up stands to offer tastings of their latest vintage. Visitors can sample cider served directly from the barrel in the traditional txotx style, accompanied by typical Basque foods such as Idiazabal cheese, chorizo and talo.

Beyond the tastings, the festival features bertsolariak, traditional Basque music and dances, and rural sports competitions (herri kirolak), which contribute to its authentic and festive character.

Astigarraga is also home to the Sagardoetxea Basque Cider Museum, where visitors can learn about the history, production, and cultural importance of cider through exhibitions and guided tastings.
