Erronkari

Erronkari, also known as Roncal in Spanish, is a picturesque town located in the Pyrenean region of Navarre, within the verdant Roncal Valley. With origins tracing back to the early medieval period, Erronkari has long served as an important hub for mountain communities, blending history, culture, and natural beauty.

The town’s foundation is closely tied to the development of the Roncal Valley, a region historically known for its livestock farming, particularly sheep. Erronkari played a vital role as a trading and administrative center within the valley, forming part of the historic “Tribute of the Three Cows” pact, a centuries-old agreement between neighboring valleys. This enduring tradition underscores the region’s commitment to cooperation and mutual respect.

Erronkari is characterized by its charming mountain architecture, defined by stone houses with steep, slate roofs designed to withstand harsh Pyrenean winters. Narrow cobblestone streets wind through the town, offering a glimpse into its historical layout. Notable buildings include the 16th-century Church of San Esteban, a fine example of Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The town is also home to the Mausoleum of Julián Gayarre, a celebrated opera singer born in Erronkari in 1844. Designed by sculptor Mariano Benlliure, the mausoleum is a masterpiece of funerary art and serves as a tribute to one of the region’s most distinguished figures. Visitors can also explore Gayarre’s birthplace, now a small museum dedicated to his life and career.

Erronkari’s natural surroundings offer numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and birdwatching. The nearby Belagua Valley and Larra-Belagua Nature Reserve are renowned for their pristine landscapes, alpine flora, and diverse wildlife. Additionally, the region is famous for its Roncal cheese, a Protected Designation of Origin product crafted from sheep’s milk.
