Garaio Beach ( Garaio Provincial Park ) and the nearby Landa beach are one of the most popular inland beaches in the Basque Country and one of the main recreational areas around the Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir. Located in the province of Araba, about 20 minutes from Vitoria-Gasteiz, Garaio attracts thousands of visitors every summer thanks to its combination of freshwater beaches, green landscapes, and outdoor activities.
Unlike the rocky Cantabrian coastline, Garaio offers calm waters and wide grassy areas perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, and spending the day outdoors. The beach is situated on a peninsula surrounded by the reservoir, creating a peaceful natural environment with beautiful views over the water and nearby hills.
The reservoir has become one of the favorite summer destinations for people from Vitoria and inland Euskadi, especially during hot weather. The calm conditions make Garaio ideal for swimming and practicing water sports such as paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, canoeing, and windsurfing. The area is also popular among cyclists and walkers thanks to the scenic trails that circle much of the reservoir shoreline.
One of Garaio’s biggest advantages is its excellent infrastructure for visitors. There are large picnic areas with tables, shaded green spaces, parking areas, toilets, showers, and seasonal bars or cafés nearby. Families especially appreciate the safe environment and the large amount of space available compared to many crowded coastal beaches.
The surrounding wetlands are also ecologically important and attract numerous bird species throughout the year, making the area interesting for nature lovers and birdwatchers. There is a birdwatching viewpoint nearby.
During summer weekends, the atmosphere can become lively, but the size of the recreational area means there is usually plenty of room to relax. Many visitors combine a swim with cycling, hiking, or simply enjoying a picnic beside the water.
