Jaureguía Tower House is one of the best examples of a medieval lineage tower house in Navarre. Located in the village of Donamaria, in the humid green valleys of northern Navarre, the building reflects the defensive architecture and social organisation that characterised the Basque and Navarrese countryside during the late Middle Ages.
Construction and Historical Function
The tower house belongs to the tradition of fortified noble residences that became common throughout Navarre during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These structures were simultaneously family residences, symbols of lineage power, and defensive buildings designed for protection during periods of local conflict.
Jaureguía Tower House is documented in 1488, although its architectural features clearly correspond to construction models developed during the 14th and 15th centuries. Unlike large royal castles, tower houses such as Jaureguía were closely linked to rural noble families who controlled local territories and agricultural resources.
From the 16th century onward, the building gradually evolved into a rural residence. The ground floor was used for livestock, the intermediate level served as the living area, and the upper wooden gallery or cadalso functioned as a granary. This combination of defensive and agricultural use was common in many historic Basque and Navarrese tower houses.
Preservation and Current Situation
The building underwent important restoration work between 2000 and 2001 and is currently in a good state of preservation, although slightly modified over the centuries. Remarkably, several original structural elements remain intact, including massive wooden beams dating back approximately 600 years, much of the internal timber framework of the upper gallery, and original wooden flooring.
Jaureguía can also be understood within the wider context of medieval fortified architecture in Navarre, alongside nearby castles, fortified villages, and defensive towers distributed across the region.
Practical Information for Visitors
The exterior of the tower house is freely accessible and can easily be visited while exploring the villages and landscapes of northern Navarre. Interior visits are only possible with a guide and require advance reservation through the Bertiz Tourism Office.
Because the surrounding region contains numerous historic villages, fortified houses, and beautiful landscapes such as the Señorio de Bertiz, Jaureguía Tower House is often included in broader cultural itineraries through northern Navarre.
