Museum of Carlism

The Museum of Carlism, located in the historic center of Estella-Lizarra (Navarre), is a museum dedicated to the study and dissemination of Carlism, a political and social movement that played a crucial role in Spanish history from the 19th century onward. The museum is housed in the Palacio del Gobernador, a historic building that has been carefully restored to accommodate the exhibition.

Carlism emerged in the early 19th century as a reaction to liberalism and sought to defend regional autonomy, traditional monarchy and Catholicism. It led to a series of civil wars (known as the Carlist Wars) and left a profound mark on Navarre and the Basque Country, where support for the movement was particularly strong due to their desire to conserve strong regional autonomy. The museum provides a balanced and well-documented perspective on this complex historical period.

The museum offers a permanent exhibition that covers the origins, development, and legacy of Carlism, with a focus on its impact in Navarre. The collection includes historical documents, propaganda materials, military uniforms, weapons, and personal objects belonging to Carlist figures. Through these artifacts, visitors gain insight into the ideology, military conflicts, and social consequences of the movement.

Interactive displays and audiovisual presentations help contextualize the Carlist Wars, which took place between the 19th and early 20th centuries, and explain their lasting influence on Spanish society. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions, conferences, and educational activities related to Navarre’s political and cultural history.

The Museo del Carlismo is centrally located in Estella-Lizarra, making it an accessible stop for those exploring the city’s historical sites. It offers informative displays in multiple languages and is suitable for visitors interested in history, political movements, and cultural heritage.
