Route around the Irabia Reservoir

The SL-NA 53C trail is a circular walking route that surrounds the Irabia Reservoir, located in the heart of the Irati Forest, one of the largest and best-preserved beech and fir forests in Europe. This itinerary offers an immersive experience in a pristine natural environment, characterised by dense woodland, crystal-clear waters, and an exceptional sense of tranquillity.

The trail begins near the Irabia dam, accessible from the villages of Orbaizeta or Ochagavía, both of which serve as common gateways to the Irati Forest. From the starting point, the path follows forest tracks and well-marked footpaths that trace the perimeter of the reservoir. The total distance is approximately 10 kilometres, with little elevation gain, making it a moderate and family-friendly route suitable for most walkers.

Throughout the hike, visitors are surrounded by the characteristic vegetation of the Irati Forest — extensive beech and fir trees that form a dense canopy filtering the sunlight and creating a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. During autumn, the landscape becomes especially striking, with the changing colours of the foliage reflected on the calm waters of the reservoir. The area also provides excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, with the possibility of spotting deer, wild boar, and numerous species of birds.

Several rest areas and viewpoints along the route allow walkers to pause and appreciate the reservoir’s mirror-like surface and the surrounding mountain slopes. The Irabia dam, built in the early 20th century to regulate the waters of the Irati River, remains an impressive engineering structure harmoniously integrated into the natural setting.

Hiking the SL-NA 53C path is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the Irati Forest. The combination of easy terrain, varied scenery, and deep natural silence makes this circular route ideal for those seeking direct contact with nature and a genuine sense of peace within one of Navarre’s most emblematic landscapes.
