When & Where: On January 18, around the Matxin square in the town center of Mungia.
The San Antontxu festivities, held annually in Mungia, are a vibrant celebration of Basque rural traditions, agriculture, and community spirit. These festivities take place on January 18 to honor Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals, farmers, and rural life. The event has deep roots in the region’s history and remains an essential part of Mungia’s cultural identity.
The main attraction of the San Antontxu festivities is the agricultural and livestock fair, which transforms Mungia into a bustling marketplace. Local farmers and producers showcase a wide array of goods, including fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, traditional Basque pastries, and homemade preserves. The fair also features livestock displays, providing an opportunity to see the region’s prized animals, such as sheep, cows, and horses, up close.
In addition to the market, the festivities include cultural performances, such as traditional Basque music, dances, and bertsolaris (improvised Basque poetry). Competitions and exhibitions, such as wood-chopping contests (aizkolariak) and rural sports demonstrations, add excitement to the event and highlight Basque cultural heritage.
