San Telmo museum

The San Telmo Museoa, located in San SebastiƔn (Donostia), is a museum dedicated to showcasing Basque society through its history, art, and culture. Its unique setting combines a restored 16th-century Dominican convent with a modern extension, creating a compelling dialogue between past and present.

Originally founded in 1902, the museum’s collection was initially housed in various locations before finding its permanent home in the former convent in 1932. The convent itself, built in the 16th century, is a significant historical landmark, adding to the museum’s overall appeal. In 2011, a major renovation and expansion project, designed by architects Nieto Sobejano, was completed, adding a contemporary wing that seamlessly integrates with the historical structure.

The San Telmo Museoa’s collection is diverse and comprehensive, offering insights into various aspects of Basque culture:

  • Ethnography: The museum features exhibits on Basque traditions, customs, and rural life, showcasing traditional clothing, tools, and household objects.
  • Fine Arts: The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and other artworks by Basque artists, spanning different periods and styles.
  • History: Exhibits trace the history of the Basque Country, from prehistoric times to the present day, covering key events and social developments.
  • Photography and Documentary Film: The museum also houses a collection of photographs and documentary films that document Basque society and culture.

The museum’s architecture is also a key attraction. The juxtaposition of the historic convent and the modern extension creates a unique architectural experience. The modern wing, with its perforated metal facade, blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The San Telmo Museoa provides a valuable resource for understanding Basque culture and its historical development.
