Weekly Market of Ordizia

When & Where: Every Wednesday, in the Plaza Nagusia of Ordizia.

The Ordiziako Azoka or Mercado de Ordizia (Weekly Market of Ordizia) is one of the most important and historic agricultural markets in the Basque Country. Held every Wednesday in the town of Ordizia (Gipuzkoa), this fair has been a key meeting point for local farmers, ranchers, and consumers for centuries. Its origins date back to 1512, when it received official recognition, and it continues to be a vital economic and social event in the region.

The market takes place in the Plaza Nagusia, a covered space where producers from across the Basque Country gather to sell high-quality local products. Among the most notable offerings are seasonal fruits and vegetables, legumes, honey, bread, cider, and artisanal sausages. However, the star product of the fair is Idiazabal cheese, a Denomination of Origin (D.O.) cheese made from raw Latxa and Carranzana sheep’s milk.

One of the fair’s highlights is the official price-setting of Idiazabal cheese, which takes place at certain times of the year and serves as a reference for markets across the region. Additionally, the fair plays an important role in preserving traditional Basque agriculture and livestock farming, promoting direct sales between producers and consumers.

Throughout the year, the Market of Ordizia hosts special themed events, such as the Shepherd’s Day (Día del Pastor) and the Basque Festivies of Ordizia, in which the best Idiazabal cheese is auctioned and usually receives bids of over 5000 €.
