Paseo de las Grandes Villas in Getxo

The Paseo de las Grandes Villas in Getxo, located in the coastal town of Getxo in Bizkaia, it’s a simple route of just over 2 kilometres, suitable for everyone, where you can enjoy the sea breeze while admiring the opulent lifestyle of the Basque bourgeoisie during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This picturesque promenade stretches along the cliffs of the Bay of Bizkaia, showcasing an array of grand residences that stand as symbols of architectural elegance and historical significance.

The villas were built primarily during the industrial boom of the late 19th century, when wealthy families from Bilbao sought to escape the city’s industrial pollution. Getxo, with its stunning coastal views and proximity to the city, became an ideal location for their summer homes. These families commissioned renowned architects to design homes that combined functionality with artistic expression, resulting in a unique collection of architectural styles, including neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance, and modernist influences.

Among the most notable residences is the Palacio de Lezama-Leguizamón, a grand neo-Gothic structure surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. Another highlight is the Villa Amezola, known for its modernist details and intricate ironwork. The Palacio de Arriluce, was designed within a neo-Gothic medieval revivalism by the architect José Luis Oriol. Many of these properties are privately owned but can be admired from the promenade.

The promenade itself is a delightful experience. Lined with trees and benches, it offers views of the Cantabrian Sea and the nearby Punta Galea cliffs. The walk also connects to the Puente Colgante, or Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adding to its cultural appeal.
