Getxophoto Image Festival

When & Where: Every year, usually in September, around different locations of Getxo. In 2026 it will be held from May 28 to June 21.

The Getxophoto is one of the leading photography and visual culture festivals in the Basque Country. Held annually in Getxo, the festival is known for transforming public spaces into open-air exhibition venues, bringing contemporary photography and visual storytelling directly into the urban landscape.

Unlike traditional photography festivals centred exclusively around museums or galleries, Getxophoto uses streets, beaches, parks, façades, and industrial spaces as exhibition sites. This approach creates a direct interaction between the public and the artwork, encouraging visitors to experience photography within the everyday environment of Getxo.

Origins and Cultural Focus

Founded in 2007, Getxophoto was created to promote contemporary photography and critical visual narratives connected to social, political, environmental, and cultural issues. Each edition revolves around a specific annual theme explored through exhibitions, installations, multimedia projects, and participatory artistic interventions.

The festival reflects the broader transformation of photography in the digital era, where documentary practices increasingly intersect with video, archives, sound, artificial intelligence, and interactive media. As a result, Getxophoto is recognised not only as a photography festival but also as a platform for contemporary visual experimentation.

Practical Information for Visitors

Getxophoto usually takes place during September. However, in 2026 the festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary and will take place from May 28 to June 21.

Exhibitions are distributed across several neighbourhoods including Algorta, Romo, and Ereaga. Many installations are outdoors and free to access, allowing visitors to explore the festival while walking along the coast and urban areas of Getxo. All the exhibitions can be viewed at a comfortable pace in approximately 4 or 5 hours.

Check their website for maps, locations, schedules and suggested routes.

Because exhibitions are spread across the municipality, comfortable walking shoes and flexible schedules are recommended for visitors planning to experience multiple installations in a single day.
