Zazpikaleak Shopping District

Zazpikaleak, also known as the Seven Streets or Casco Viejo of Bilbao, is the historic commercial heart of the city and the largest open-air pedestrian shopping district in the Basque Country. Its narrow pedestrian streets combine centuries of history with a dense network of local businesses, markets, restaurants, and cultural spaces, making it both a historic quarter and a major commercial centre.

History and Commercial Importance

The district developed from the original medieval nucleus of Bilbao, founded in 1300 along the banks of the Nervión River. Over time, the Seven Streets — known in Euskera as Zazpi Kaleak — became the economic centre of the city, concentrating merchants, guilds, workshops, and trading houses connected to Bilbao’s port activity.

Today, the area forms the largest open-air pedestrian shopping district on the Cantabrian coast. The Association of Merchants of Bilbao Old Town has played a central role in the preservation and revitalisation of the neighbourhood since its foundation in 1969, making it the oldest commercial association of its kind in Spain.

The Seven Streets it’s filled with businesses of every type, including fashion, footwear, crafts, jewellery, homeware, pharmacies, hospitality venues, banking services, and tourism-related establishments.

Markets, Gastronomy and Cultural Activities

Zazpikaleak is not only a shopping district but also a major cultural and social space within Bilbao. Throughout the year, the merchants’ association organises numerous commercial and cultural events that reinforce the identity of the neighbourhood.

Among the best-known initiatives are the Christmas street lighting, gastronomic competitions, local food fairs, and the famous Ganga Market, considered the oldest and largest bargain market in Euskadi. Seasonal festivals, concerts, and public events also contribute to the lively atmosphere of the district.

The area is especially known for its pintxo bars, traditional taverns, and local gastronomy, making it an important destination for visitors interested in Basque food culture.

Practical Information for Visitors

Because the district is entirely pedestrianised, Zazpikaleak is best explored on foot. Most streets are concentrated within a relatively compact area near the river and are easily accessible by metro, tram, and train.

Visitors often combine shopping with visits to nearby landmarks such as Santiago Cathedral, Plaza Nueva, and the Ribera Market. Weekends and evenings are usually the liveliest periods, particularly during festivals and cultural events.
