Txakoli Museum – Txakolingunea

Txakolingunea is the perfect place to discover the history, culture, and traditions of txakoli, the famous white wine of the Basque Country. Located in the coastal town of Bakio, surrounded by vineyards overlooking the Cantabrian Sea, this small museum and interpretation center offers visitors an introduction to one of the region’s most distinctive products.

Txakoli (or txakolina in Basque) is a slightly sparkling, fresh white wine traditionally produced along the Basque coast. For centuries, it was mainly consumed locally by fishermen, farmers, and rural families, but in recent decades it has become one of the best-known wines of northern Spain. Today, most txakoli production is protected under official denominations of origin: Bizkaiko Txakolina, Getariako Txakolina, and Arabako Txakolina.

The unique climate of the Basque coast plays a major role in the character of txakoli. The combination of Atlantic humidity, mild temperatures, and steep coastal vineyards creates wines with high acidity, low alcohol content, and fresh citrus and herbal aromas.

Txakolingunea explains the entire winemaking process, from vineyard cultivation to fermentation and bottling. Through audiovisual displays, historical photographs, and interactive exhibits, visitors can learn how txakoli evolved from a local farmhouse wine into an internationally recognized product. The museum also highlights the close relationship between Basque gastronomy and wine culture.

One of the highlights of the visit is the wine tasting experience, where visitors can sample local txakoli while enjoying views over the surrounding vineyards. The center also provides information about nearby wineries in Bakio and other parts of Bizkaia.

Txakolingunea is located about 30 minutes from Bilbao by car and can easily be combined with visits to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe or the Basque coast.
