Chapel of Zumetxaga

The Zumetxagako San Migel chapel, located in Mungia, Bizkaia, is a simple but interesting example of Romanesque architecture and a site of significant historical and cultural value.

Dating back to the 12th or 13th century, the chapel is dedicated to Saint Michael (San Migel), and it’s among the oldest preserved Christian structures in Bizkaia, alongside San Pelayo chapel in Bakio and San Pedro de Abrisketa chapel in Arrigorriaga. Surrounded by a serene rural landscape, this small religious building is a testament to the region’s medieval heritage.

Its Romanesque style is evident in its simplicity and robust structure, featuring thick stone walls, a semicircular apse, and rounded arches that are characteristic of the period. The architectural details reflect the practical and spiritual values of the time, emphasizing stability and a connection to the divine.

Inside, the chapel preserves some notable decorative elements, including carved capitals and remnants of medieval art, which offer insights into the religious iconography of the era. Though modest in size, the building exudes a sense of timelessness and sacredness, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in medieval art and architecture.
